This
piece was created using a process I think of as “spontaneous coloring”.
All the shapes in the design were cut from an assortment of
light-valued, neutral-colored, subtle fabrics. The pieces which were
intended to be foreground were then embellished with layers of chiffon
and tulle which produced complex, transparent coloration. When all the
foreground shapes were colored, I then assembled the design using a
traditional piecing technique. This approach feels much more intuitive
and spontaneous than my normal method of choosing different colored
fabrics at the onset for each piece in the design and allows me to
“paint” with fabric in a spontaneous way. After the top was assembled I
added a number of transparent tulle circles which created a light, airy
effect, giving the whole quilt a celebratory, light-hearted
feel—luscious and bubbly!
